Spotlight on Business – Buckner’s Source for Sports

Source For Sports® is a national buying group with over 150 stores across Canada. The buying group originated in the late 1960’s with a handful of sporting goods stores in southwestern Ontario who believed that 2 independent retailers could buy better than one and pass the value on to their customers.

Today Source For Sports® is a national brand made up of independently owned and operated stores across the country who still live by the same philosophy – that a group of independents can purchase products at a better price than a single retailer and pass that value on to their customers. We aren’t a franchise, corporation or a big box store.  Each store across Canada is as unique as the community it serves. No two stores are alike and each one sells different sport categories and products based on the needs of the local community.

No one knows the local sports scene better than the Source For Sports® store owner.  Most grew up in their local community and many are second generation owners in the family business who coach teams, play sports, and sponsor local teams and associations.  Most of our stores have a very long history with many being considered amongst the longest serving sporting goods stores in Canada.

The owners and staff at your local Source For Sports® are athletes just like you. Our partnerships with the top manufacturers allow us to actually test many of their products on the ice or the field before bringing them into our stores. We know our stuff® isn’t just a tag line at Source For Sports®, it’s who we are. We play the game and we understand how proper fit and the gear we sell will elevate your comfort, safety, performance and enjoyment of the sport you play.

Business Spotlight: Welland Toyota

Welland Toyota has been in business for over 25 years. The company first opened its doors in the south part of Welland, and in 2011 moved North to its new premier facility located at 894 Niagara Street across from MT Bellies and next to the Seaway Mall. The new location features a LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environment Design) Gold certified building with an inventory of over 200 vehicles.

Dealer Principal Frank Trivieri has over 25 years of experience in the automotive industry and he is proud to return to the Niagara Region where he grew up, taking on the ownership of the dealership. Having worked as a General Director and Executive Vice President in the corporate automotive industry, Frank applies his knowledge of running a top service-oriented business and he understands what makes a great car dealership.

The dealership has grown over the past few years from 15 employees to 26, including 2 master technicians, 6 fulltime sales advisors, and an apprenticeship program. With this growth Frank strives to ensure the company maintains the small business feel, as he personally takes pride in getting to know his customers and lending an ear when needed.

“Being able to take my experiences I’ve had working in the automotive industry and applying them to running my own store is something that I’m extremely excited about. My first choice of product was the Toyota brand, and many people ask me why Toyota? Basically this is because it is the brand that many manufacturers and automotive executives use as the benchmark when comparing their own company.”

“Toyota is now the largest automaker in the World and has just been voted as the number one most trusted passenger vehicle manufacturer for seven years in a row. This speaks for itself,” adds Frank.

The dealership showcases vehicles ranging from small compact cars to large pick up trucks and sports utilities, including four different types of hybrid vehicles. They also trade in and sell used cars of all makes and models.

When asked about working in Welland, Frank says,

“Welland is a wonderful place to do business! Working with the community and individuals on a daily basis, speaking and meeting customers is always an enjoyable experience. Welland is a vibrant growing community in Niagara. With the new residential as well as commercial growth, it is ideal for a customer-service oriented business. People in Welland are smart, resourceful, and discerning shoppers. As customers, they want up-front information and competitive pricing right from the start. This is our experience here and we try to match precisely what the customer is looking for, taking care of them before, during, and after purchasing a vehicle.”

Currently Welland Toyota supports and sponsors minor hockey and soccer, the United Way, the Boys and Girls Club, Women’s Place and many other local groups. Just last summer they enjoyed a pizza lunch for over 40 soccer kids and parents in their service drive through. “Most of our employees are big sports fans and love to support the kids getting out there and playing sports. We proudly mount our Welland Toyota jerseys and team photo on our showroom wall.”

When asked about free time Frank answered, “Free time is family time for me. My wife and I love traveling especially road trips and spending time with our ‘adult kids’ who are so much fun and they keep us laughing. We all love every sporting event whether it’s Sunday football or weekend hockey and most of my friends know I am a huge Chicago fan.”

Welland Toyota occasionally hosts family events with activities for kids and/or bbq’s for various holidays and celebrations that they announce on social media. If you want to know more about any ongoing sales and events, be sure to like Welland Toyota on their Facebook page in order to receive updates: https://www.facebook.com/wellandtoyota or visit their website at www.wellandtoyota.ca

Business Spotlight : BP Sports Park

Bullett Proof Baseball opened in 1992, which was a Baseball Training Program, when Scott Bullett was playing Professional Baseball with the Chicago Cubs. He wanted to give back to the Community, share his knowledge with players, and give kids a place to go. In 2012, Scott realized his dream to have a multi-sport facility for the youth of the region – which is why he started BP Sports Park 2012.

BP Sports Park is a multi-sports facility. It is the only one of its kind in the Region as the Coaching Staff are former Professional Players. We train players of all skill levels. The facilities at BP Sports Park are for everybody! Whatever your sport, Baseball, Basketball, Soccer, Volleyball and more. On top of sports training we do private lessons in the sports, PD Day Camps, March Break and Summer Camps, Birthday Parties, Team Parties and Facility Rentals of all of our sport areas.

When asked ‘How did you decide to go into this line of work? What do you love most about what you do??’ Scott replied, “I was lucky enough to be able to play sports growing up and participate in programs that kept me busy and active. I wanted other kids to have a place to go, to learn and stay out of trouble. Also in the long run to help youth achieve goals through their education and sports. Helping them get to the next level whether it be in school or in to a higher level of sports. I love seeing a kid accomplish something that they are working hard for– anything whether it is a new pitch or a good grad on a test.”

I love Welland. It is a city that represents a Solid Community. It is a city with everything that you need but with a small town feel. I think that Welland holds great events, I enjoy them all. My favorite would have to be the Julia’s Hope Cup. It is truly a testament of the Community coming together to honor and support a family from our Community while giving to a great cause.

BP Sports Park sponsors as many causes as it can. ‘We encourage all of our families to give back to the Community. We have our graduates come back and help the younger players. We push community involvement here at BP Sports Park.’ BP Sports Park is for everybody. We find a way to make sure that everybody can participate.

Business Spotlight: Coins Unlimited, Noyes Jewellers, Crackerjack Stadium

Newly located at 620 Niagara Street in Welland, with three businesses under the same roof the Noyes family are more than Niagara’s Coin Specialists, they are Value Educators.

Numismatist, coin enthusiast, and Coins Unlimited owner Rob Noyes has been collecting, buying, selling, and trading coins of all metals, variations and countries since the early 1980s.  Having followed the coin collecting circuit

Coins Unlimited has become the headquarters of Niagara’s growing precious metals investment community, estate appraising, and trending gold and silver raw materials buyer. Whether by appointment or walk-in, the professional, knowledgable staff are on-hand to assist your buying or selling interests.

“It’s like going to the market, but now you’re shopping for money,” describes Noyes.  Besides the obvious Canadian dollars and cents, Coins Unlimited buys and sells US dollars, used or broken gold and silver jewellery, old banknotes, estate silver pieces and much more all at up-to-the-minute market value.  “We’re constantly in tune with the world’s precious metals and international currency values”, says Noyes.

Aimed to educate, Noyes and his staff are quick to share the ins and outs of today’s money value, collecting and investing for the future, and cashing in on current trends.

Crackerjack Stadium

Brad Noyes Crackerjack StadiumHistory

Since the 80s, Brad Noyes had a passion for sports’ great athletes and the collectible card market.  It’s amazing to think that collectible cards originated from a company trying to find better ways to market their gum.
I started selling packs, boxes, and singles of Upper Deck, Pro Set, etc in a small area in my dad’s (Rob Noyes) stores Kay’s Korner Variety & Coins Unlimited on Thorold Road in Welland, Ontario. The early 90s hobby craze catapulted success and a Sports Card Dealer was high in demand.

The Collector Bug

Who really knows where it comes from, but for most it’s just an innate feeling inside that drives you to have to collect every card and insert in the set, soak in each player’s card image and season stats, to meticulously sleeve and topload all the cards listed in your latest edition of Beckett Price Guide.

Crackerjack Stadium brings sports, entertainment, and gaming fans one step closer to the big time!

Salon22  has been open in Welland at  the same location since 1986. I followed in my father’s footsteps and took an interest when I was 14 years old. He was a great inspiration to me and a great teacher.

What I love most about this business is that it is a constantly changing and evolving business. Being able to be creative while at the same time making people feel good is what makes this job so amazing. We offer many different service from cutting, coloring, highlights, to spa services.

Welland is where I grew up and where I knew I wanted to have my business. I love the friendly people, the way the community comes together to make Welland a beautiful, safe and fun place to be.

Salon22 is an Aveda concept salon. Aveda’s  mission is to care for the world we live in, from the products we make to the ways in which we give back to society.
